I don't think they'r tacked...cause it looks like they are pulled through a loop at the bottom.. it's easy to pull the front edge straight through so they hang straight and have the edges pulled out loosely so they flow. (did that make any sense?)The weight of the loop & the tug of the loose hanging fabric will make the front part hang straight and stiffly together.

ok so now that I know this, it just leaves the sleeves themselves.. I see some sort of cuff.. trying to figure out if that is the satin band and it is attached tightly so the loose lighter fabric is falling over it... or if it is actually some kind of cuff. ^_^

hmm.. well.. off to fabric store happy

I have the same question-- separate piece of fabric for the armbands/cuffs, or just the satin edging sewn to itself!? At least some of my many many questions are now being answered!

Fabric store for you, Halloween costume muslin sewing for me...

Ok.. I've figured out the sleeves.. How I see it is, the sleeves are just the satin edging that has been attached to itself as you say. The part of the sleeve that is gathered is actually longer than her arm.. maybe from the gold armband to her fingertips.. so when the satin is made into a cuff, the extra cloth falls over the cuff and hides it.

I got part of my fabric.. I found the poly chiffon was actually a bit too thin O_o so I haven't purchased anything for the top layer yet. For the under dress I am modifying a low-back dress pattern and making it out of a slightly thicker material.. still a bit transparent.. but not so much that I'd look naked O_O I may go back and decide to do the top layer in the chiffon.. or I may find something else. we'll see happy There deffinitely needs to be an underskirt of some type for modesty and poofiness happy

as for the dye, I'm going to be brave and sew the dress before I dye it. It's so fitted that to get it even across perfectly with pre-dyed fabric would be impossible X_X

*sew sew sew*

Poly chiffon too thin, huh? My current top choice for the mantle fabric is Dharma's 10 mm silk chiffon-- seems to have just enough weight to it. But I'm certainly open to other suggestions!

I too am pondering putting a top chiffon layer over the underdress...from the pics we have I'm really not sure whether there is one or not; the back of the underdress looks like such a clean line. But there's got to be a chiffon overskirt, so how else would it be attached without it showing through the mantle?

I'm also going to make the dress before I dye it, for the reasons you mentioned. Do you have experience with this kind of dyeing? I haven't really done *any* before (I know, crazy dress to be learning to dye for the first time!), and I'm wondering if you can dip-dye as a "batch," holding all the fabric together, or if you really have to stretch it out to its full length and do it bit by bit.

Not sure I am picturing what you are saying right... here's what I'd doing

1) underdress made entirely of a material slightly thicker than chiffon.. shaped much like an evening gown with tight-fitting top that leads to a flowing skirt.

2)mantle on top.. maybe a silk chiffon if I can find/afford it

3) thicker skirt under just the lower half of the dress to give it the poof.. I may even attach the hem of this to the underdress.

why am I doing this? because the underdress is obviously a one-piece, but the top is transparent (can see her nipples) and the bottom is thicker & opaque, suggesting maybe a skirt under the under-dress LOL I'll draw some pics in a minute..

As for dye.. stretching the fabric does make it more even.. but since you're making a costume not the queens ballgown you probably have room for your dye to be slightly off here wink Just make sure none of the fabric is touching when you dye it, cause this can cause a tie-dye like effect.

Sorry I'm so confusing. happy This is a tough dress to describe in just words! But I think you put it pretty well. If the underdress was made of a thicker, but still translucent material, that'd eliminate the need for a chiffon overlayer. And I'd probably line the whole underdress, for modesty. ;-) Definitely need multiple layers on the underdress skirt-- the way it looks as she's walking really suggests multiple layers, maybe even some kind of petticoat, to me.

Silk chiffon comes from Dharma at terrific prices (around $5-6 a yard). You can order samples from them, free shipping, if you're concerned about the feel of the fabric. (That's what I did.)

dress in progress.. found a real easy dress pattern from mc calls that I could alter for the under dress ^_^ I'm not sure now there is a thick lining on the underdress, b/c I tried a thicker material and it flowed a lot differently than the walking pic. I am going to try now a thinner material with a lining. If I can find a non synthetic lining it may help me with the dye job too, cause the dye will stick to the lining even if it won't stick to the poly fabric wink

Whoo.. hard work

Picture! happy

It's kinda cool, you can see how the back of the arm bands dip and how the back of the dress itself is held up.
