, how about spirit gum? There's a saying among models that duct tape and spirit gum can solve most problems (but that's another story). =)
If you can find it, something which would be perfect is Japanese sock glue. Japanese kids have to have their socks are the perfect level to be cool, but it's hard because they like really big baggy ankle-warmer-type socks, so some bright spark came up with a glue stick to stick the socks to the right position on the ankle. I've used it before to keep a backless dress in place and it works like a charm.
The double sided tape which
StromtrooperPrincess
mentioned is also a really good idea. If all else fails, you can use regular double sided tape, but test some on an unobtrusive spot first to make sure that it doesn't stain or leave a yucky mark.
Okay, I'll go back to lurking quietly now. =)

I have the perfect solution--They make this "roll on" sticky adhesive that is meant just for such an occassion. It goes on clear like deodorant or something and will keep whatever material stuck to you without the gummy adhesive of a tape. I have a source that will mail order it for you--but first off check with your local fabric store. I will post the brand name as soon as I remember it--duh?
**Edit** Brand Name is called
"It Stays" Body Adhesive
, and it is made by New Horizon's.
Another suggestion--You can make a casing on the lining only--at the top close to the edge. You can run some thin elastic through it just to add a tiny touch of "snuggness" to hug you as you move. Not enough to really cause a gather once the gown is on you. Does that make sense??
Yeah!! The Pastel dress has been revived--I'm not the only one working on this gown right now!

RE: Rainbow dress
Hey everyone! I'm so excited because my dress is nearly done!!!! (I've stared it like one year ago, but I work on it very rarely - and I need to have it done by 5/30)
My under dress just needs some adjustements (I've lost weight since I did it) and the hem. Tonight I've done all the tackeling for the over dress (without the ribbon though), and I attached it to the underdress to see how it looked, tried it on , and yes!!!!! It's working!
Now all I have left is the actual sewing with the machine, and add the ribbon. I'm thinking hard about how to make the colors right, but all the great advises on this forums have given me loads of ideas. I know some people did painting on their dresses, and I'd be very interested to hear more about if (I'm planning to do the ombre dying for the under dress, and paint the over dress).
Woa, sorry for all, that, but I'm so excited I couldn't help sharing my recent progresses with you!!

RE: Rainbow dress
Awesome news, Aliabes.
Today I got almost all of the dress sewn together, just a couple seams to go. Tomorrow I'm going to baste the dress and lining together, see how it looks, and then, next week-- dyeing!!! Woohoo!

RE: Rainbow dress
Yay! Finished basting the dress together, then basted it to the lining-- looks like it's going to work! The only problem is I think the dress is too short.
So I'll probably put an extra strip of fabric along the bottom, and when its dyed it won't show up, really.
Tomorrow I'm going to un-do the basting, sew the dress together for real, and serge the seams. And think about dye. I'm very open to suggestions-- I'd like to use something cold-water, so I can paint it on easily, and my fabrics are mostly silk, except for the chiffon mantle, which we think has some rayon in it because it took up RIT dye pretty easily. Something from Dharma? Dylon? Any ideas?

RE: Rainbow dress
Jaina
Congrats on your dress--so far
This dress is one of those things that just when you think you have it figured out it comes back and shakes you up. I just sent away one of these dresses and am making 2 more right now (can you see the beads of perspiration??) I am constantly figuring out a better way to do one part or another--and I am much happier than with my version 1.0. Anyways--here is my .02 on dye--
First time I made this dress I dyed the fabric
Then
constructed the garment--Let me just say I stand corrected--it is
SO MUCH
easier to construct the dress then dye it (well construct it minus hem, lining). I personally like Rit Dye--I usually do this dress out of poly--and it dyes like a dream, even the satin binding. I used Golden Yellow, Rose Pink, and I combine Blue (I think it is called Denim blue ??, and Purple together). I use very hot water and do it in my washing machine while constantly handling it to control the color placement. For some reason everywhere in town is out of stock of Rit dye in Rose Pink (please do not discontinue it
) So I had to use Rit Fushia in a horrible pinch--Actually it was great!!! The pink is gorgeous--A little stronger than my original more subdued pink--Only thing is that since the Purple/Blue combination is done on top of the existing Pink, the end result with the Fushia dye gives a more purple bottom, as where the Rose Pink gives a more blue/gray/purple bottom (more like in the movie). I will have to post pics so ya'll can pick which one like. I digress...
Anyways-In my horrible mad dash around town for rose pink Rit--I settled for Dylon warm water dyes which even say they work on Poly. I combined 2 dark pinks and soaked the fabric for 2 hours (instructions only said 45mins) I ran the cycle, heat set in the dryer and then HORROR!!! When I went to moisten the bottom of the fabric so I could put in into the purple/blue bath (I wet it so there isn't a disctinct color line) The PINK ran right off of the fabric into the water. NO JOKE!!! I have never had that happen before--ever. I have dyed all sorts of things--including Polyester, and never. So needless to say Warm Dylon is not my friend. However, I have had great luck with Dylon Cold.
I prefer liquid to powder, too.
PLEASE READ IF YOU ARE IN THE DYEING PROCESS********
Be advised if you use Fray Check or Block on your serged seams or fraying sheer fabric, and then decide to place it in the dye--you will pull out a big suprise. The spots that are treated with fray check will take the dye 1000 times more than the rest of the fabric--and once it is done with 3 colors it will turn black!!! I am just warning you! It can be a nightmare if you accidently get a drop of fray check somewhere it doesn't belong--so be careful, or save the fray check until after the dyeing.
Sorry I'm so long winded

RE: Rainbow dress
Another update from Caitlin in Rainbow-Dress Land: added an extension to the bottom of the dress (quite time-consuming, but necessary, I think). Stitched the dress together. Didn't get a chance to serge seams as I was late getting into the costume shop (way too late a night last night!).
Thanks for the dyeing advice, Ferd. I think I might try Dylon cold water (assuming I can find it!) and I know the art store in Central Square sells procion dyes...although I hear they can react badly with silk?

Slowly, slowly, the progress continues. Today, ironed and serged the seams on the lining, and got a start on ironing the dress.
Whole day tomorrow to work on it...

RE: Rainbow dress
Spacelady, could you be more specific? Whom are you addressing, and what would you like them to post a picture of?
I didn't do a whole lot on Friday, since I spent most of the day finishing my best friend's Eowyn chemise (pictures to come soon!) They showed TTT on campus last night and we scared all our friends by going in costume. <g> I did finishing ironing all the seams on the dress.
This weekend is Fun with Dyeing. At the recommendation of my instructor (and the fact that I have *lots* of RIT on hand in the proper colors), I'm going to experiment with RIT on scraps of my silk and chiffon. I think if I prepare the dye with boiling water, then let it cool, I should be able to paint it on my silk without fear of it harming the dress, and get a nice pastel color. The current plan is to finish just the dress part by Friday May 2 (so I can wear it to Senior Ball) and then finish the mantle by the end of school (May 15). And then I can get rid of my "Incomplete" in costume design and graduate! Woohoo!

Here are some pics of my latest version of this dress. It is kinda of hard to display on a dressform considering there are no arms--but hopefully you can tell a little bit about the finished product.

I like the dye job on that much better than the first one. Although that one looked didn't look bad. The colors just seem to blend together better.
