I meant that this dye job looks better than the one on the first rainbow gown Ferd made.

Stormtrooper Princess Thanks! I am a lot happier with this version (which I have just done 2 of lately (whew!) I dyed the dress after construction and was a lot happier with the outcome. My first dress (as seen on my site) was more subtle, but the pics that were taken outside did bleach the colors out a lot, too.

Spacelady confused The drape in the front is knotted (like the concept drawing) There is a metal/sintra ornament that adorns it, but the person I made this for opted for no arm bands or ornament. There isn't any other knot in the dress-but the train and back drapes do bustle up.

Thanks for looking ya'll happy ~Ferd

*P.S. This is 100% Poly happy

Ferd, the new version looks fabulous! How many of these have you made now? My head spins just thinking about it!

Spacelady, I don't have any pictures of my dress yet, since there's not a lot to take pictures *of*. Hopefully, if all goes well, I'll have pics of the underdress by this weekend. However, if you read through this thread, lots of folks have posted pictures of their dresses. There's also lots of wonderful information on making the dress itself. If you were to share with us what you were thinking about doing-- patterns and fabric and such-- rather than just "I'm making this dress, any help is appreciated," I'm sure we could be of much more help to you.

Wow, dyeing is hard work! But I have SUCCESS to report-- I think painting the RIT on is going to work just fine!

Currently I'm using Golden Yellow at 1/16 strength, Rose Pink at 1/4 strength, and Evening Blue at 1/4 strength. I think the blue is a little pale, though, so I might mix up some Royal Blue, or use the full-strength Evening Blue, and fade that in at the very bottom. I've done one test rainbow-piece, about to start on another. I'll take pics with my digital camera and post them tonight!

Yes! Success with Royal Blue at the bottom. :-D

Maybe I can dye the dress tomorrow! Time now to pack up all my dyes (I bought Gladware to store the mixed-up dyes in, so I don't have to remake them-- they work just fine when they're cold).

Hope I'm not boring you all too much with my updates, but I'm very very excited!

Way to go Caitlin Glad to hear you are having success with the dyeing process!! happy Can't wait to see your finished dress happy

I am partial to blue at the bottom versus Purple. I use purple and blue dyes togehter and get the end result of a gray/blue/purple that I really like. The last color for me is always the lightest to take--especially on poly. I use all the dyes at full strength for this reason. Dress #6 is on the table now and my goodness--it never gets easier. There is a lot of fabric, and a lot of dye.

Thanks Ferd! I also think the bottom is more blue than purple, from watching the DVD many many times. wink

I now have a picture up of the two rainbow test pieces that I dyed today.

For the dye, can't you just get fabric that is the right colors?

Edit: Off subject question. When you all are finished with dresses how to you hang them up?

Edit 2: Caitlin great job with the dress!! grin It looks very fabbious!!! grin

Spacelady: thank you. The problem with just getting different fabrics in the proper colors is that it's not accurate. The dress actually has the different colors fading into each other, which is something you can only accomplish with custom dyeing.

And on that note, I DYED MY DRESS TODAY!!!! It took about two and half hours, plus another hour of setup/cleanup. It's currently drying, draped over some chairs. I think it looks wonderful, but then I'm biased. wink I should have pics up tonight.

Your test samples looked great (especially the second one), so I'm sure the dress does, too.

Jedi Lucass- Congrats on your finished dress! Woo Hoo! grin

You can find Sintra at a local sign shop (the kind of place that prints signs for stores). Normally it is sold in very large pieces for like $40--but if you are lucky you should be able to find a place to sale you a small piece for around $4. It comes in differents thicknesses- I would recommend 1/8" thick. **Also note that Sintra is a brand name** so they may have another name of the same stuff.
I just sent Maggie some tips on how I make my version--so there will be a some-what tutorial up sometime soon. If you have any questions I would be happy to help you out happy ~~~Ferd happy

Jaina, your test piece does look great! Can't wait to see the whole thing! happy

Ok FERD, my four year old niece (yes, four) is obsessed with Padme and Anakin right now and asked good old Aunite Dawn to make her the rainbow dress (the picnic one too! Yippee! grin ). I've studied your notes over at Maggie's and I think I got it pretty much understood. Thank you sooooo freakin' much for supplying all that great info and illustrations too!
I made the underdress today, and since she is four, the back is covered up. She is also known within the family as 'The Master of Disaster' so this version is pared down to hopefully withstand distastrous playtimes.
I might bug you with some questions along the way.... tongue

Obi-Dawn grin How cute!! I cannot wait to see your "mini-me" version of this dress--I know it will be adorable. What material are you using? Good idea to heighten the back--it is a little risque' for a 4-year old ! I always thought skater's illusion would work well in the back, too (You know--the stuff that looks like pantyhose).

I would be *happy* to help you with anything--it would be my pleasure. happy ~~~Ferd

JainaMSolo, your dress pieces are lovely!

I just wanted to ask--is there anyone here who has used only Dylon dyes in making this dress? That's what I'll have to use, since that's the only brand they carry here.

I think I'm actually going to start on this dress, after so many months of deliberation and lurking on this thread. =)
