. Merry Christmas to
path-seeker
, who requested a Han/Anakin/Ben story. (Details of the request at the end.)
It was cold in the maintenance bay as Han put away the tools he’d used to fix something on the exterior of the Falcon. It had taken both his patience and Anakin at the controls in the cockpit to adjust the sensors properly, but they’d finally gotten it.
A sharp clank rang out behind him and he spun to see what it was. There, ten paces away, was a black, round droid with spider-like ‘legs.’ Han frowned, knowing what this was and wondering how an intelligence droid had gotten in here. He remembered these things from that time on Hoth… it had been cold then, too. He didn’t dare move, suspecting that any movement could possibly set it off, and whatever way it had been programmed to react, he didn’t want to find out the hard way.
A sudden flash of blaster fire, and the droid began to beep wildly. Recognizing that sound, Han dove out of the way. It was a good thing that he’d launched himself farther away, because that was when the intel droid exploded.
When the clamor died down, Han rolled over and sat up to look. Where the droid had floated, there was now debris. Burnt, cracked… smoking debris. Turning to see who had fired, Han saw his son, still with blaster in hand, on the boarding ramp. “It’s a good thing you’re a better shot than your mother, kid.”
Anakin snorted as he holstered his weapon. “She would have done the same thing, Dad.” He looked toward the door of the maintenance bay and saw his cousin, who had both a blaster and a lightsaber drawn. “Was that the only one, Ben?”
“I think so,” Ben said slowly as he put his blaster away. The lightsaber stayed in his hand, however. His green eyes were wary as he looked from one end of the maintenance bay to the other… only when he was satisfied that there were no other threats in the immediate vicinity did he relax a little more.
Han got up and went to get a better look at the pile of debris. There wasn’t much left to pull information from so they could find out where the droid had come from… he picked up a flattened piece of what had to have been a side panel. There was half of a sigil there that felt oddly Corellian. “This could be Corellian.”
Ben sighed. “Does it matter right now, Uncle?”
Han stood up again, still holding the flat piece, and looked at Ben. “I’d like to know why it was spying on us, Ben. Who it belonged to and where it came from… How’d you get here so fast, anyway?”
“Mom and Dad sent me to gather up the two of you for dinner because your comms are off.” Ben nodded at Anakin as he joined them. “Good shooting.”
“Thanks,” Anakin replied, and was startled by the sudden intensity of Ben’s gaze. “What?” His cousin only glared at people like that usually for one reason… and that was when he realized that his hand felt colder than it should have.
Ben motioned to said hand. “How did you do that?”
Anakin looked down and saw the laceration marring the back of his hand. “I felt the presence of something wrong outside and… I guess I was a little careless.”
Ben glanced at his uncle. “Go on ahead. We’ll stop by medical, get him some treatment, and then follow.”
Han nodded and left the bay. They’d be all right…
Fini…
Recipient: path-seeker
she requested:
- An AU where Ben and Anakin have grown up together
- A seemingly simple task or mission that doesn’t go as planned
- The line “It’s a good thing you’re a better shot than your mother, kid.”
I would not like: angst
Characters: Han Solo, Anakin Solo, Ben Skywalker

RE: The Better Shot [Christmas Fic Gift for path-seeker] (AU)
This is a wonderful fic gift!
I especially loved the interactions between the characters, and the relaxed banter.
“It’s a good thing you’re a better shot than your mother, kid.”
Anakin snorted as he holstered his weapon. “She would have done the same thing, Dad.”
Perfect response, and it's so true!
“Mom and Dad sent me to gather up the two of you for dinner because your comms are off.” Ben nodded at Anakin as he joined them. “Good shooting.”
This is my favorite part. It shows how close their families are (love that they're having dinner together), and the friendship between Anakin and Ben. I've always seen those two as being a lot alike, and I wish they could have grown up together. You characterize both so well, and seeing them interact here was such a treat.
I love it - thanks again!

Glad you liked it, path-seeker, and I enjoyed writing it. Best part was the 'where they grew up together' angle.
