I agree. Jar Jar Binks was a hilarious character. Here's hoping we see more of him.

The honorable Senator from Naboos' "Dellow Fellagates" speech really puts new meaning into the "Who's the more foolish...the fool or the fool who follows him?" line, heh.

I do so love reading threads by Palpatine/Empire apologists...gives me a chuckle every time. You guys think you are being provacative, think you have this unique insight into Star Wars that somehow the millions and millions of Star Wars fans missed, and think you are demonstrating your vastly superior intellect by creating these "empire good, rebels bad" type threads...I get the whole playing Devils advocate thing, stirring the pot, but c'mon...enough is enough. Some of the logic used is simply ridiculous.

It really comes down to what is considered "good".

The Empire represents totalitarian control.

The Old Republic represents Democracy.

If a totalitarian leader were to be compassionate and selfless, then it would probably be the best solution.

For me the problem is that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Democracy, while a bit erratic and prone to trends and sensationalism, represents a series of checks and balances so that no one person has total power.

But how can one person decide what is truly "compassionate and selfless"?

Dude, you make it sound like you think I'm causing problems by looking at the movie differently than most people. I love Star Wars, and I've got a lot of interpretive views on it. I figured a Star Wars message board would be a pretty good place to posit my opinions on, you know, Star Wars. If I was out to prove my "vastly superior intellect", I'd do it someplace where it matters. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I was under the impression that discussing movies was something people did for enjoyment.

I was flipping through a book full of Star Wars essays and I came across one with a similar argument to this--saying that the Empire represents stability, and that the Ewoks dancing around at the end of RotJ means that the galaxy is going to descend into primitive chaos.

Actually, the author was making the larger claim that, narratively speaking, Darth Vader is the most interesting character and that his kids are incidental and boring (and that his absence from the prequels is why they 'suck'). Needless to say, I kind of raised an eyebrow (mostly at the pronouncement that Leia is so predictable and dull its hard to believe she shares genes with Vader).

In any political debate of this importance and magnitude, I follow a personal philosophy of...what would Alexander Hamilton do?

If he was Palpatine's aide de camp, he'd be with him...otherwise I'm pretty sure he'd be with Lando and the folks being capitalists chilling on Bespin. happy

Stability is not the end-all goal for government, though. If it were, we'd all be happy Nazis/Soviets/North Koreans today. Those featured highly stable societies, after all. wink

The so-called stability often breeds chaos, though. Look at Iran. The government rules with an iron fist, and yet they can't stop their people from surging into the streets once the people realize that there was a fraudulent election and a total wing nut was "re-elected." The latter, that surge for freedom and proper democracy, is basically what the Rebel Alliance represents. Yes, from a certain point of view, the rebels can be seen as terrorists, but they never really inspired fear. They inspired hope.

In the end, this sort of debate comes down to "one's man terrorist is another man's freedom fighter." In this case, most of us will view the rebels as freedom fighters, because that's what Star Wars, a story about good vs. evil, intends to represent them as. Others, albeit a small minority, will view Palpatine as a victim of rebel terrorism. It all comes down to our own point of view.

I remember once hearing someone say this about terrorists: "Terrorists is what the big army calls the little army."

I hope I quoted him correctly, since I think it was Hugh Jackman as Wolverine of the X-MEN. tongue

The Empire is the reorganization of the government while Palpatine held office as supreme chancellor. So theoretically the Rebels are the bad guys because theyre opposing the government (It's not an outside force taking over the galaxy or someone who wasn't in the government like Dooku taking over)

But because of some of Empire's ideas and ways that they ruled by:

- Xenophobia
- Destruction of worlds inhabited by countless innocents
- Slavery

The Rebels weren't the "bad" guys. If Palpatine's Empire was just and civil, it'd be wrong to attack and overthrow the Emperor.
