Yeah, but again, do we really need to limit the jcc to only goofy threads? Don't get me wrong, I love my goofy threads, but having a more diverse selection of threads would help. Discouraging music / movie / book / etc discussion, and telling people to go elsewhere to talk about these subjects wont help. The JC as a whole has slimmed down... possibly / probably to the point where we really don't need as many forums as we have. I think the perception of the JC being overstaffed may be due to the fact that we have too many boards which are incredibly slow / vacant.

I agree that Senate should probably stay put because the place has a completely different style from JCC. I do agree with ophelia that something needs to be done to generate more participation.

I see your point but for me it's not so much discouraging as it is decreasing redundancy, for lack of a better word. I just don't see the point of having essentially the same threads in different forums. I know for Amph people may say that it's a different community over there compared to YJCC. Perhaps it was like this when Amph was created but I personally haven't seen much difference for a long time now. If you just look at the regular posters there these days, the majority of them are YJCC regulars as well.

Like I said I think it'll make things too crowded. Then again maybe there is a method of doing it so that doesn't happen.

EDIT: Perhaps I'm misinterpreting what is meant by combining the forums. Is it merely moving all threads from one forum into another? Or is it something else?

Maybe not moving every single thread... but yes, the key ones. I'm thinking back to when 3SA was combined with the PT forum. Some key threads that were pretty much staples from the 3SA were moved over to PT, along with the moderators. That transition went really well.

I don't think there's a problem with specialized boards as long as there is a core group that continues to use them.

Adding things back into the JCC may delight the users there-- less boards to check to catch up on particular topics. The JCC's still a relatively fast moving board, though--the front pages' activity ranges from 5:58pm to 7:28am board time for me with 50ppp. A fairly long range considering the JCC's activity in the past, but still fast to some of the slower boards. Would mixing those specialized topics in end up with them just getting lost and annoying their key posters?

Is this something that would improve the boards as a whole, or just the JCC?

that's a fair question. i think as our community gets smaller and smaller it will make sense to consolidate more and more of the non-sw discussion in the community forum. it will keep the community fairly large and at the same time hopefully make it closer than ever. but i don't really think we're at the point now where that's a must. we're probably not ready to incorporate games into the jcc for instance, but i do think we should move toward putting the tv, movie (esp. science fiction) and sports discussion back into the jcc. as it stands now the old joke about the jcc being for nothing but spam is truer than ever.

Yeah, but to be honest what do you think of when someone says YJCC? I don't think movie or TV threads are the first things that come to mind. I know it's not the best example considering the low amount of votes, but the Top 100 Threads list is dominated by "goofy" threads, social threads, etc.

And I don't think this is something recent that is the result of the forum declining.

of course frivolity has always been the staple of the jcc. but i think the forum is at it's best when there is a balance of goofy threads and interesting topics. if it's all goofiness the place tends to only appeal to cliques and people who can keep up with all the inside jokes. you run the risk of alienating new users and old users alike. with more discussion of actual topics with substance it's easier for anyone to join in.

This may or may not be a good idea, but how about trying to stop some of the 100+ Page threads? New members who join would probably get bewildered by having to read several hundred pages, especially when the topic changes regulary?

I am not saying that they are bad, but especially with the game threads, where it might get confusing to new members who don't won't to trawl through loads of pages to see whats happening? Only an idea...?

I'd say integration of the Senate with the JCC is possible. Serious discussion goes on there - the 2008 election thread in the JCC seemed to go smoothly most of the time and was often much more interesting than the Senate election thread.

You'd have to be able to flag a JCC thread for serious debate and then moderate the process carefully until people catch on.

I also agree with KnightWriter that shuffling forums around isn't going to help with the underlying decline in traffic and activity.

Not sure if this ir the right place to put it but anyway, In the Trivia Games, we currently are having a decline in people joining. One of the probelms is that the host of the game doesn't have the ability to change the Heading, and so it currently still says we are on Q6, despite the Fact that we have finished the Game and and looking for players for a new one:

Is there a possibility that the hosts of games such as these can have the power to update the headings, so people know what's going on?

The only way is if the forum stays editable, meaning you can edit posts indefinitely (like Fan Fiction). I doubt any forums will do that, but the game host can always PM any mod or RSA online to change the title.
