Darth_Eagle, I think that sounds like it could work. If you mock it instead of just cutting the fabric, you may even figure out a way to make a kind of cape out of the left-over edges.

Thank you so much for your help! I'm starting on this today yay! Lol I usually can only find those giant fuzzy slippers so I'm like hmm. It'd be neat if she was wearing giant fuzzy slippers, but going by the look of the costume, I highly doubt that. :P
Also I was going to order my pearls from fire mountain gems. Any suggestions for size?

I have a question about the dress. The idea of using an undergown helps solve a lot of problems I was having with the dress, but I'm not exactly sure what I should do over top. When I look at the picture, I don't see any seams in the front. I know they need to be there somewhere, but I'm not sure how I should cut the fabric. Any suggestions?

Hey, did anyone else see the girl at C3 who had a "prom" version of this gown? It was absolutely lovely and I thought it was a great interpretation. I wondered if it was scratch-built or if she used an existing dress as the base.

Okay, I need a second opinion before I go cutting.

So I'm making this dress for a masquerade coming up soon, so I want it to look pretty accurate.
This is my plan so far:
I'm going to make a normal, strapless dress to help keep everything in place and such. My underdress is going to be http://www.simplicity.com/assets/5207/5207.jpg , the black one with no straps and no overlay. Mine will be made of white, and it'll be a cheap-ish fabric. Then I plan on attaching the lavender fabric overtop.

This is the first time I'll be cutting fabric without a store bought pattern, so I thought I would check to see if anyone has any suggestions or possible help. Thanks a lot! happy

Lil_Miss_Amidala,

Hey,
If you are starting from scratch I would recommend drafting your own from tracing/drafting paper just like the store patterns. If you don't have the time/paper/money I would recommend that you make drawings of the seperate pieces on typing paper and label them with numbers so you don't confuse them later. And it might make it go faster if you wrote down the probable dimensions of each piece. I've done the latter option before and found that it worked quite well for me. That's all I've got, perhaps someone with more experience can help you with a better suggestion. happy Good luck! This dress is so pretty, I'm working on my own version right now.
I'm doing the underdress in a pink broadcloth, thanks to Ferd's suggestion! I'll try to post pictures of that when I'm done, followed by the top layer. Mine is a lavender/pink satin. happy

Hi, I do not want to start another "Color debate" but is it just me or this Satin Lingerie could actually be grey satin instead of lavender ?? Remember the first pic we've seen on it was on a Blue set....perhaps the blue reflected on the satin and made it appear Lavender...coz in this shot : http://padawansguide.com/padme3/lavender/promo1.jpg I just can't tell if it's lavender or grey....

any thoughts ?

Someone told me that Trisha was quoted as saying it was a 'Silk Satin in Lavender'. Because of the way the color changes in light, I believe it's a lavender/blue color. Her costumes in this movie have a lot of Blues and Violets and it would make sense that her nightgown would follow suit happy

At the Rick McCallum Spectacular at C3 I was trying to pay attention during that scene. I do still think that its lavendar.

But after the movie release, when more high res shots are released I'm sure well get more details on it. wink

I know the material that I used for this gown changes color drastically in different lights. At times I would easily call it gray. Then it looks baby blue, and periwinkle, and sometimes lavender. Like I said it is a bluish on one side and a pinkish purple on the back, so the cross threads give it that wonderful color changing ability. I would not be surprised at all if the same was true for the original fabric possessed the same color changing qualities. It's nearly impossible for me to capture it with a camera--it looks so different depending on how you hold it, how it drapes, the lighting it's in, etc.

Certainly is not a fabric for those who subscribe to the Crayola 8 pack of color names. tongue

Yeah, I was thinking of cutting the pieces out on newspaper to get an idea of what it will look like, and once I find one that I like, I'll put it on to paper that won't leave marks on the fabric and cut it like I would any other pattern.

Hey guys, I'm not making this but recently saw the back picture and my mind immediately referenced the Blue Dress from Phantom of the Opera (stage show.)

You see, that dress has that style of drape, typically refered to as, wait for it... water fall drapes. Water reference here you see;) Probably not by accident.

I have tested my theory on how to make this style of drapery recently on another Phantom costume, and have taken photos of it pleated and not pleated:

The shape of the curve at the top alters the shape of the flare, the shape of the bottom curve shapes the bottom of each fold of the pleats. I don't think Padme's flare to much at the bottom. So a half circle for the two is actually pretty close to what the pattern would be.

I'm also going to scan my pattern for another set of water fall drapes and those who are not sure how to draft them can see how you can use a ruler and graph paper to figure it out;) And a spare bit of paper cut to shape.

I think the drapes are more deviated from a circlar shape though due to past experiments for said Phantom costumes...

Also you'll note, in Padme's gown, part of the top edge of the drapery is left to hang free which alters the line of the pleats at the top.

Oh and the different nature of the fabric involved (silk charmeuse for Padme faced and lined velvet for Phantom) creates different creases and subtle fold differences as well.

That is actually a similar shape I've been experimenting with to see the drape (yay for scrap $1/yd fabrics lol). I 've been hanving a problem getting the last fold on the bottom and I think I may try your shape tonight and see how it lays.

For people who have made costumes for children to grow with... how do you do it so the original seams don't show when taken out? With the satin, the holes will show later on sad I was going to leave much more fabric on the inside so when she grows it can be taken out (same with the bottom hem).
