RE: Rainbow dress
ok, everyone, I have a warning for you! When you make the neck and arm bands,if you paint them silver, be sure to buy paint
made special for plastic
I learned the hard way on my Princess Leia dress, if you don't it will rub off even when its dry and get all over your costume. And believe me, paint is a nightmare to clean.
Also, for those of you who are a little intimidated by the whole dyeing process, you could just use layers of chiffion. Thats what I did. You have to drape it just right, and it takes ALOT of fabric, but it works just as well.
I'm going to try and use my friends scanner soon so I can post pics so you see what I mean.

RE: Rainbow dress
hi everyone!
i'm new to the board so i think most of you are probably too far along for my advice to be any help, but here goes:
from looking at pictures (lots of pictures!), i've decided that the dress is made of four parts. the under-dress is a halterneck lycra dress with a very low back and straps that cross over the front at the collar bones.this gives the basic shape so that the material cannot be seen under the jewellry. the second part, the skirt, is a circle of poly chiffon(silk chiffon feels nicer, but it drapes slightly differently and has a sheen that is not present on padmes gown). the radius is the desired length with a circle cut from the middle that fits the waist(it's back to 8th grade algebra folks!). a slit about 6in long needs to be made at the back and the ends can be fastened with a button. you won't be able to see this at the end because it is covered by the bustle. the third part is the mantle, the most difficult to make, as i'm sure you know. the dress is reminiscent of ancient roman or greek gowns so i got my inspiration from there. if you have a tube of chiffon with a very large circumference, you can step inside it and the edge will be drawn up to the neck and fastened there. the sides of the tube can be sewn along lycra 'sleeves' in pleats to create that ruffled effect. the draped bit at the front means at the front of the tube, you want the edges to taper into a triangle so it can be bunched up and held in place. the back of the mantle has a bustle so the back of the tube will have to be twice as long as the front. at the point where the front ends, gather the material at the back and try tucking it in different ways. when you have found the way, tack it together away from the rest of the dress and sew a strip of lycra on the inside. to this, attatch poppers (you know what i mean dont you?) and put the rest on the inside of the dress. it is easier to make the dress as seperate parts and assemble them later. the jewellry can be made using sintra and just added on at the end. sorry its so long, hope you can make sense of that! its just my interpretation of it so tell me what you think!

Your description makes sense, it is pretty much what I had thought too. Have you started yours? Mine is still (crude) sketches I made during a boring meeting at work!

*nod* Sounds pretty much like what I thought. I've been debating between layering over the entire underdress with the chiffon, or just making a skirt; and I've been having some issues trying to figure out how to make the bustle look right.
Mine's still just sketches, too; made during a boring Star Wars RPG session!

mines still at the planning stage, and unless i get it perfect, its gonna stay that way. i dont want an exact copy cos mine is going to be a function dress for my prom and operas. I think that cos my hair is blonde, i will use different colours, maybe lilac instead of yellow and red instead of purple. what do you think?
p.s. i've seen some poly chiffon already dyed on a gradient at my local haberdashers but i think its done in the opposite way to the gown so it would change colour across instead of down. i didn't get a good enough look though

if you really wanted to use the orignal colors you could. I'm blonde and I did, it still looked fine.

youre gonna need a machine dye in yellow and a cold dye in purple. when im dying stuff i always use Dylon cos it gives a really rich colour. follow the instructions on the yellow dye and once it is finished, leave it a day (for the dye to settle) then mix up the purple in a bucket or trough big enough for you to dip the edges of the fabric in . use a washing line to peg the material out and wet it with a spray bottle. then hang the wet fabric over the dye and dip the edge you want darkest in. the dye will slowly creep up the fabric, and will be more diluted further up because of the water. its a bit like chromatography. one thing to remember though, you must keep going back to it to check that the fabric is damp or you will get dark lines where the dye has ran out of water
as for fabric, try polyester chiffon. i dont know how much it is in the US but in Britain its about £6.00/m
hope that helped

Just from looking at the dress (I haven't made it. Yet.), I believe it is. At the top, slightly gathered, and hidden underneath the bottom of the silver neckpiece.
http://www.padawansguide.com/padme/pastel/makingof11_pastel/p
ages/Picture%2025.htm shows the section of gathers I'm talking about.
Two rather blurry images of the front also show the effect:

And then there's this large image that shows the front drape going up underneath the silver piece:

RE: Rainbow dress
happy to help severina,
from my experience with dyes (which is from artwork NOT costume making ) the fabric is dyed first. simply so that if you screw up you dont ruin all that work. besides, the mantle is easy to dye this way ,once it has been formed into a tube. the skirt will have to be dyed on one edge and then turned around and done like this repeatedly since it is a circle.
but before you go and act on my advice, please note that my costuming capabilities are so far limited to barbie dolls for my nieces. i am definatly capable of designing such a project but as far as making is concerned...we shall see

RE: Rainbow dress
Hi I'm new to this fan page and I'm really in deep umm doodoo?lol. I really need help on this rainbow dress. I read all your postings and believe me it has helped alot but I have a few problems. I am wearing this dress to next year's senior prom(hopefully) and the woman who is designing the dress has a few "problems". She wants to know what is the best material to use fro the dress because in my opinion I would like it to be like a see-through and very light material to add a bit of "sexiness" to the dress. I also want to know about the four layers of the dress.. if you can help..anyone got any clear pictures? email me at PR_Beauty2001@yahoo.com. How much would you say the dress should cost..money is not an object but its nice to know how empty my pockets are gonna be. Thank you guys sooooo much.

here's an idea, what if the designs for the necklace and the arm bands were drawn out onto paper and taken to a metalworker. they could hammer out the pieces in aluminium so it is very light and they can be stained afterwards so that they look old.
