RE: Rainbow dress
Ok- here's a little bit of help for those of you who are asking for it. Mind you-this is my interpretation so take it for what it's worth
First off I made the underdress out of a bridal weight satin not lycra-I was going for a tailored evening dress designed gown because I don't usually like the look of stretched lycra--I wanted it to have a more elegant feel. This dress fabric is a diamond (creamy) white. This dress is the frame that the whole dress is built around. It has a halter neckline with a "choker" style piece that holds the dress up and goes around the neck. This is totally hidden by the necklace. There are bust line darts for a fitted look and feel as it plunges very far down just above the rear. I put a small zipper just over the derrier for ease in dressing. I made 3 overlayers of hand dyed chiffon that are made just like the underdress. I strategically dyed the chiffon in shades of lavender, mauve, rose pink, and blue gray after I had already dyed all the chiffon a subtle yellow. The entire dye job is very subtle and looks like a pastel cloud. The multiple layers add to this effect. This dress style is very fitted through the bust waist and top of hips then flares to quite a full skirt. The front drape was created using 118" wide chiffon (again dyed accordingly) the piece was about 5 yards. In the middle of this piece I ran gathering stitches and pinned this near the neckline - and let the sides drape down. I gathered the sides to create the pleats-I then edged this is a 2" wide satin edging which I lightly dyed with pastel colors. These pieces got sewn to "gauntlet" style arm pieces made of a yellow dyed knit. The center of the drape was shaped and hemmed and pinned up with an ornament. The drape and bustle for the back was done in a similar style, with more satin edging. The top edge of the gown was finished when I inserted the lining for the dress. The necklace and arm pieces I made out of sintra and handpainted with mother of pearl and ultra violet paints and edged in gold. The necklace is kept in place on the dress with tiny snaps.
I'm very sorry that this is soooooooo long-just trying to help some of ya'll out.

RE: Rainbow dress
Thanks for the wonderful help! I just have two more things to ask you. How tall are you, because you gave measurements and I wanted to know if they would fit me. And Do you think you could send a picture of the dress so I can see how it turned out. Thanks again!

I'm one of those vertically challenged people
(5'4 3/4"-LOL every little bit helps) But this dress wasn't for me--the girl who I made it for was 5'5" and VERY tiny (about a size 2-4)
I will post the pictures ASAP!! Can't wait for ya'll to see them

Thanks sooooooo much. That is really good for me because I'm about 5'4" and about size 2-4. How long did it take you to make it?

LOL - for those of you who think that you're cursed because you're short, don't feel bad! It stinks to be tall too! I'm 5'9 and I can
never
find pants that are long enough!! drives me insane! Plus, whenever I do find them they always shrink after the first wash. So I guess we're all cursed in some way

Mrs. Mayim_Naar - I know EXACTLY what you're saying! I'm about 5'10 and pant-selecting is horrible! Same is shoe-selecting because there are no shoes that you can buy these days that aren't *really* high heeled.
How's everyone coming on their gowns?

YOU RULE FERDALUMP!!
thanks so much for all that! I just have a couple questions. But I'm going to wait for the pictures to see how it looks first. Oh, I would like to know how much the thing cost you to make! And the fabric separately--that's a whole lot of chiffon!!! And an approximation of hours, perhaps?? thanks!
Oh, ya'll ain't got nothin' on me! Try finding pants when you are exactly 6' tall! Shoes are worse...I wear a 13-14 in womens!
But I love it!!! Except that it severely narrows the guys I can date. But there's this 6'4 cutie...

RE: Rainbow dress
A 13-14 women's yikes!
You're on the other end of the spectrum from me: I wear a kiddies size 2.5. I wear a women's size 5 in sandals or whatever, but I have to pick the smallest cuts, and even then there is like an inch of room. O well!

RE: Rainbow dress
Gosh ya'll- I feel like an Oompa-Loompa surrounded by a bunch of jolly green giants
! I guess I can't complain too much-'cause I'm the tallest in my family- and I have nice average feet-size 7
As far as how long it took me-hard to say. I was working on my proto-type then as I was learning on that-I started making a "real one" I kinda of work on things here and there-jumping around from project to project. The underdress, zipper and stitching of lining you can whip out pretty quickly. The stitching for the over layers go quickly too-but the dyeing is time consuming. I used several colors, and needed to give each time to absorb, and controlled the drying to prohibit a line. Also the front "wings" and bustle are a little interesting to work in--mostly I just pinned on to my dressform and stand back and look and then re-pinned until I got it right. The necklace took me a night to cut, shape and paint. All told I probably spent about 2 weeks working some days-some nights and letting it stand for several days while I thought it through. The materials were probaably around $150-$175 or so for everything--sintra,thread, zipper, lining, paint, and boxes and boxes of dye!
Will get the pics up ASAP

RE: Rainbow dress
Wow that seems like a lot of work, especially to me, I have never sewn anything except a little stuffed animal and even that didn't turn out all to well. My mom is a very good sewer and I am really trying to convince her to help me, or rather make it for me! Anyway thanks for the help and if you ever consider making one to sell to someone I would definately buy it, if it's a price that I could afford!

RE: Rainbow dress
Hello Everybody,
I'm posting here not that often, but this site is one of my main sources for re-creating all the lovely SW dresses.
I would like to contribute a version of this dress I did for a girl in a local competition. It is not an original re-creation but I the girl loved the dress so much that I altered the colours to a pink going over into a raspberry.
You can have a look at my photo album. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to shoot proper photos, so the ones are actually direct from the competition. I will see, that I get her to model for me again.
I did the dress with silk charmeuse and the overlay with silk chiffon. And I just finished it in the nick of time, hence there was no time to "organize" a neclace.
But the girl (and everybody else) was over the moon and even the host mentioned it.
Have a look at the "Rainbow Dress"
All in all the dress is such a nice design itself that is leaves open uncountable possibilities.

That dress looks great. With the coloring it probably would look better w/out the necklace!
