i got laughed at when i said i was gonna dye polyesther. i'm a bit afraid that it's not gonna take at all or it will come off later on my skin.
what is your recommendations for dying poly?
i was told if i wanted to achieve a light blue color i should use rit royal blue dye (because it barely takes).
is this true?

RE: Rainbow dress
Hey there--Don't know if you want my 2 cents-considering I've already given such lengthy posts
But I can state, and back up with pictures and fabric samples to anyone who wants them that YOU CAN dye polyester. A good rule of thumb is that it generally takes the dye a bit lighter than cotton or any other natural fiber. If you use the boiling stove top method the dye will become stronger, and you can achieve vibrant colors if you so desire.
For this dress especially experiment with mixing colors to achieve the desired shade--and always TEST TEST TEST!!!
I used Rit dye, both powder and liquid concentrate, I prefer the liquid, but either works fine. I have also used Dylon Dye it.
I wish I could videotape myself doing the dyeing on this dress and broadcast it here. As Always I am more than happy to answer any questions about how I make my dresses so please feel free to post questions here or in PMs. Hope that helps a little.

RE: Rainbow dress
I have to agree with
FERD
. It is definatly possible to dye polyester! For proof, check out my corset tutorial (in my sig) for the picnic dress.
Her advice is dead on, as well!
And I cannot agree more with the "TEST TEST TEST" sentiment ;o)

, your corset fabric was 100% polyester, right? 35 minutes...probably less for the rainbow dress chiffon, since the yellow's so light...yeah, I think that'll work. Maybe if I come in with a sample already dyed, they'll concede the point.
Of course, then they'll start tearing their hair out over my wanting to use lycra for the underdress. <g> I can hear them now..."Caitlin, that's stretch! Stretch!"

RE: Rainbow dress
JainaMSolo
, I posted here some time ago a variation of this dress I made for a client in pink.
I used silk chiffon,(which is not shiny at all) for the upper layer and silk charmeuse (the reverse side for the underdress and the shiny side for neck and arm pieces) for the simple reason that she wanted to have the dress in variegated pink colours.
Regarding the dress you refering to, this is
not
done in silk chiffon. It seemes to me like silk, but rather habotai or maybe charmeuse, like I used for the underdress.
I personally would use a silk fabric again, because I think that with so many metres of fabric for the outer layer, the poly fabric tends to look very bulky on the person, which you don't have with the silk fabric.
But I have to agree that to dye the silk is much more difficult than the poly, because silk is taking the dye so beautiful and strong, which in this case is not required at all.
I'm sorry, that I couldn't help you with your argument to use the poly chiffon. But in this case I'm on the side of your instructors
If you are interested there are some pics of
The Rainbow Dress
I did.

, actually I'm really glad to hear your counterargument! I've never used silk chiffon before, so I actually didn't know whether it was shiny or not-- although I did know that it took dye very strongly. Perhaps my teachers have some tips on getting it to dye less strongly.
Mostly I'm inclined to use poly chiffon because I already have 10 yards of it ;-). But I think Leslie said she could set us up with a pretty cheap source of silk chiffon. Well, I'll talk to her on Thursday and see.
By the way, I remember seeing pictures of that dress when you first posted it, and it's just *gorgeous*! Someday, I think I'll do a variant on this dress in blue...mmmm, blue. ;-)

I REALLY want to make this dress! But I'm kind of nervous about it...maybe I'm not the good sewer that this dress requires...I think I have to test to make it to a Barbie doll first...

Oh, also,
Creena
, how thick was the silk chiffon you used? I just checked out Dharma and they have 8 mm and 10 mm-- seems like the thicker chiffon would work better for this dress. Anyway, I just ordered a bunch of samples (hurray free shipping!) so I guess I'll see what they look like when they get here.

RE: Rainbow dress
JainaMSolo
, yes, I used 8 mm chiffon and as you said, Dharma has great prices. This was one of the main reasons to go with silk in the first place.
I'm living in Ireland, so I had to get somebody to send it to me, cause Dharma (unfortunately) doesn't ship outside the States. But still it cost less (with the postage included!!) than the poly chiffon over here. I would have payed approx. $10/yard for the poly and that would be a cheap source. I found cheaper ones over here, but they all seemed to have a kind of pattern weaved in and when touched, feeled very artificial.
The thing is, that the next time, I would go probably with the 10 mm chiffon, cause with the 8mm chiffon it looked slightly crinkly after the dying and even with ironing (pressing). It is barely visible and it doesn't bother me at all, the opposite, I think it looks very nice. Maybe you wouldn't have this effect with the heavier (10mm) silk chiffon.
Anyway, I only can say, go with the silk chiffon.
Even with the dyeing, it shouldn't be a problem, either dilute the dye to a weaker colour and/or don't leave it in that long. And even with the poly chiffon you have to try and find out how long and how strong.
Good luck, anyway.

RE: Rainbow dress
Creena, did you use a specific pattern for your version of the Rainbow dress? I would *love* to wear this to a formal function for my school but it's definitely not dresscode with the back...or rather lack thereof, eh-heh. Just wondering anyway.

RE: Rainbow dress
Hi
Kate
, no I didn't use a specific pattern.
The dress has a high waist (meaning the skirt part start right under the bust line) and the upper part is kind of a triangle.
The skirt part is cut on the bias which gives it a beautiful drape and looks very flowing. The back is not as low as the original and the dress is closed with a invisible zipper.
If your dress code doesn't allow a bare back, why don't you take the chiffon overlay over your shoulders and let it come down the back.
It certainly is not like the original anymore but would make a nice variation. Just an idea.

RE: Rainbow dress
and I thought I'd seen ALL the reproductions of this dress! I guess I did see the latter of these pics, but not the outside pics. And the indoor ones don't do justice to the colors. I'd never thought of doing a high back like that, but I love it!! It's looks very elegant, but still recognizable. If I choose to do this for Prom, I think I might do this.
great job, Creena! After I finish the Tatooine costume and have time to look at this dress some more, I'll start experimenting with these ideas.
