On this one, you can see a lot of the details of the head band

Sorry to drag this old thing back up again..
looking at your pictures.. the "under dress" as you say is a lot darker than the arm/neck drape.. that's what gives the bright yellow color. I think the arm drape is actually a very pale yellow or off-white, where the under dress is getting closer to canary yellow, which makes the top layer look a lot more yellow than it is when the sun hits it.

also, the "under dress" appears to have some sort of lining on the bottom half because it looks a lot more opaque.. BUT it certainly isn't lined on the top. If you look at the pics they are a little......nipply? Suggesting that there is no satin dress underneath at all ^_^;; just a couple layers of the thin material with something opaque beneath the skirt for modesty reasons.

as for the top layer.. the reason I call it the arm drape.. it looks to me like the front half of that is as you say.. a large half-circle that is attached at the collar and arms. however the back half of that top layer is constructed differently. If you look at the "walking" pics.. it looks like the dress has a huge amount of fabric in back and falls from her arms.. also look at when they are helping her into the boat in the making of video, the fabric in the back is amazingly long and trailing behind her arms. Because of this, and some close up pics of the back I think that there is no bustle at all.. and the ringlet at the back of the dress just holds the backs of the sleeves which look like VERY long strips of cloth. when they are down the dress flows all around the back and when they are pulled up it looks like a bustle.

^_^ anyway I talk a lot. what are your thoughts? pardon any typing mistakes I am in a rush ^_^

eek! now I have a question.. the concept art shows the sating "edging" in the center of the front of the dress... some people have made their costumes like that and some just have the dress going straight across in front.. which is accurate? Strangely enough, none of the pictures I have seen have been a detailed image of the front of the dress. X_X

Don't be sorry! I'm still hard at work on planning this dress and I love to hear other people's thoughts!

also, the "under dress" appears to have some sort of lining on the bottom half because it looks a lot more opaque.. BUT it certainly isn't lined on the top. If you look at the pics they are a little......nipply? I agree, to a point. I think that the top of the underdress is *definitely* a lycra-- you can see it really well here. I still haven't figured out if it's a lycra leotard or bodysuit, with an attached skirt, or if it's actually a whole lycra dress with some sort of petticoat or overlayer to make it poofier. I'm leaning towards bodysuit with attached skirt, because that would keep that low, low back in place pretty well. But then that brings up the questions of how and where the skirt is attached, and how you do it without it showing through the chiffon of the mantle (or as you call it, the arm drape), and how much of the underdress is covered by a chiffon overlayer-- because the chiffon doesn't strech like lycra! Ay yi yi...

for the top layer.. the reason I call it the arm drape.. it looks to me like the front half of that is as you say.. a large half-circle that is attached at the collar and arms.

I've actually tried draping this piece (front and back) with one loooong (10 yd) piece of chiffon, and it actually works fantastically well. I completely agree with your thoughts on the back layer-- it's just the long, long ends of the front layer, tacked at the rear of the dress. When I tried draping it, the only problem I had was that the front didn't drape quite properly-- it tended to make a sort of "bucket" when I gathered the bottom into an elastic band. So I'm thinking that the front is shaped a bit, but the whole rest of the mantle/arm layer is just a very very long length of chiffon. 10 yards was actually a leetle bit skimpy; 11 I think would be perfect. (And what a delightful coincidence-- Dharma sells silk chiffon in 11 yd bolts!)

Glad to see discussion going in this thread again!!!

^_^ That is a good pic.. but I don't think it's lycra... cause I alwas also looking at this pic that was posted above http://www.natalieportman.com/temp/swep2/ep2%20dvd%20-%20love%20featurette/ep2_dvd_love_featurette-3.jpg

it looks almost as if the entire underdress is one very well fitted dress that comes down from the top & to a point at the rear. I have seen dresses like this that don't use lycra at all.. ^_^ This would also make the construction a LOT easier if it is true, ne?

oh another thought.. your "bucket" problem and my edging problem may be one & the same. if the front is in fact 2 pieces that are both edged in satin instead of one sheet all the way across, they would fall differently when they were tied together at the bottom

take a look at the concept sketch.. notice how in that pic the front has 2 pieces.. I was thinking that the dress was flat across.. but now that I go back & look at all the pics we have they are all either from the side, back, or are blurry.. and in the blurry ones there does appear to be a lighter strip in the front, suggesting that the concept sketch may be accurate after all..??

Oh, wow, I hadn't even looked at those pics Aliabes had posted...the computer I was using earlier just didn't like the links. Arrrgh! That featurette pic of the back *does* make it looks like it's just fitted, I agree completely, but that side pic, the way the fabric is just a little bunched up, and the way it's stitched on the side, it *so* looks like lycra! Argh!

As to your question about the satin edging-- yeah, from this pic, it really really looks like there's satin down the middle too. Grrr. I was hoping there wasn't; I liked it better without.

All right. We have two pieces for the mantle that meet in the front, both satin-edged. Are they simply connected at the bottom, or tacked together on the way down? I'm leaning toward tacked together.

Oh, and thanks for the link! Helpful, that-- I should've been looking closer in earlier visits to the Padawan's Guide!
