Okay Spitsweet, can you make me one of those for myself? Lol I'm just a beginner, and I have no idea what to do or where to begin. I've read most of these posts, and I still don't know what to do.

Hi everyone!

Well I started to make this dress - I'll definitely post pictures when I'm done happy I dyed my material tonight - hopefully it will be dry by tomorrow or at least relatively soon so I can do the gradient and then sew cool

Sorry if I am dragging this post back up to the top from the dead blush but I did have a quick question for anyone who can answer it - this is my first time working with poly chiffon and I wanted to know how I should "treat" the ends of the fabric so that the material doesn't unravel? Do I back it with something and create a normal hem? or no hem at all? It doesn't seem like the ends are sewn over on the actual costume but I'm fairly certain if I leave it like it is the material may unravel though I'm not sure.

If anyone can help please let me know! Thank you! happy I love everyone's recreations of the costumes - I hope mine turns out as nice ***crosses fingers***

Ami-Chan Welcome to the thread happy
Chiffon is a fun fabric to work with (not!) First of all, make sure you tear it so you have a straight hem, then I would first treat it with a fray check to minimize the fraying. I would personally do a rolled hem for the hem. You machine might have a special foot for that, or your serger. If not, you can do a "whip and roll" where you zig zag stich and your "zag" goes just off the edge of the fabric and when you "zig" it will "whip and roll" encasing the raw edge into the zig zag stitches. Make sense ? confused

I, also, am about to start this dress! After finals are over this week, and FAFSA the next.. After months and months of planning--finally! I'm starting now to finish it by May. I want to make a prototype first, though.

What fabric should I use for a cheap mock-up version? Muslin? I want something that will at least slightly resemble the dress itself as far as movement and draping... And old bedsheet perhaps--would that work? lightweight and free!! :-D

Thanks FERDALUMP! My machine doesn't have a special foot for it but I understand what you mean by the zig-zag stitch thing. I will definitely practice on a part of the chiffon before I actually do it on the real thing.

Muslin seems like a good idea for a practice run. I probably should have made a practice dress but eh - I'm too impatient and I think it'll turn out okay happy I hope...

I'm insane-- I mocked my mantle up using poly chiffon ($40 for 10 yds) and I'm making the actual one out of silk chiffon. The underdress I mocked up with muslin.

If this dress works out, I think I'm going to make an all-poly version too, using my mockup chiffon plus the poly crepe I bought for the lining of my silk underdress. There's enough rayon (or something) in both that it does take Rit dye fairly well. If you have any friends who are between a size 6 and 8, and might want a rainbow dress, lemme know. ;-) Of course this is all dependent on my silk version working out properly.

And all of this has to wait till February, when the madness that is the Musical is finally over!

Don't forget to check the sales tables at Wal-mart for cheap (often ugly) fabric that can be used for mock-ups. You can usually find fabrics with a similar drape and texture as your good fabric.

You could use a lightweight lining fabric--it will be inexpensive and imitate the flow and drape of a chiffon. Also, I second the wal-mart bargain table--you can find great mock up fabrics there for $1.00 a yard!

Caitlin, you're using silk chiffon? I want to when I make my final version, but I've read it's a pain to dye... Let me know how the dying (um..the dress..;)) works out! And are you an experience dye-er, dye-person...yeah. ?

hehe So far, both costumes I've made were done with $1-$2 fabric at Wal-Mart! But unfortunately there isn't cheap silk chiffon. happy

Oh wow using silk would be so amazing! Heh heh - maybe one day I'll make it out of silk but I'm content with having a poly version happy

Has anyone thought of a way to do the hairstyle? I am planning to use a wig but I'm not sure how to give it that fullness that it needs. Extensions maybe? I'm not sure that would work though because the wig is synthetic - I don't want it to melt! (plus I'd like to reuse the wig for other costumes if possible)

Ami-Chan There is a thread for Padme's hairstyles. It is probably a few pages back. Queenseamstress is a hairstylist and has posted a lot of great tips.

I think her hair looks quite teased (LOL!) and I made the headpieces out of foam headbands which I had to cut down, fabric cover, adorn with beads and stuff. You can see pics in my signature.

Sky-- I'm not experienced with dye at all, but I'm doing this dress for a costuming class, so the two instructors, who have a *ton* of experience, are helping me. They're the ones who recommended I make it of silk. happy

You actually can find silk chiffon pretty cheaply at dharma trading, silk connection, and thai silks. It's just in the stores that it's insanely priced.

That pattern is pretty good-- but not completely accurate. From watching the DVD over and over on 1/8 speed, with zoom, I'm pretty sure her underdress has no bustle or train; that's created entirely by gathering the mantle up. happy

FYI --Maggie from the Padwan's Guide and I are working on a "How to Make it" section on this dress for her awesome costuming site. I have drawn out a lot of sketches--and will also be photo journaling the construction of one of these gowns. It should be up and running pretty soon.
