RE: Rainbow dress
*glares at her sample of silk chiffon* Anyway... I'm in the process of talking to a seamstress about making this dress for me for prom... getting together all the fabric information and the like. my dad and I plan to airbrush the fabric for the blending effect. I don't trust myself dying, and there's more control with airbrushing. For those who have already dyed/airbrushed the fabric, which did you use? I've got a yard of chiffon I'm about to test on... but it seems rather waxy in feel. Does it accept the dye very well? How does the silk chiffon react? Also, for the underdress, what color is it and what type of fabric... I'm not really sure what it is, and my eyes have studied the referance pics on padawans guide for hours... I'm torn between silk and something that isn't silk. Any help would be wonderful!

Howdy--as mentioned earlier Maggie (padawan's guide) and I are putting together a page on "How to make this gown." I am working on one right now for a young lady to wear to Prom--so I will add pictures of the construction progress of that gown as soon as I can. I had some free doodle time and sketched out some basics of how I make my version of this dress. I spent a lot of time doing this --while watching a Buffy marathon--so I have already seen some things I need to fine tune and change slightly. This page has just been put up on the Padawan's Guide, but it is an "early stage" page for this dress. It has a long way to go--but maybe this will help out a little. Be kind to my little "chicken scratch doodles"

RE: Rainbow dress
FERDALUMP
- your sketches are FANTASTIC~! (^_^) I wish I had them before I started.
I have a long ways to go before I finish though! (^_^) Where can you get that Wrights White Satin Blanket Binding? I assume that is a particular brand - is it possible to get it online?
I do have a couple of questions though (these are general design questions). It's kinda too late for me to go back and redo parts of this dress but I figure if I decide to ever do this dress again, I'll know what to do for future reference.
1) I'm really confused about the satin edging. I have watched the scene where Natalie wears this dress a bazillion times but I'm still confused! It seems like it's part of the chiffon overlay (you can clearly tell it's not a part of the underdress if you look closely enough) but it doesn't seem like the satin edging goes all the way around the top of the chiffon overlay (I hope that makes sense). It's definitely along the bottom edge of the chiffon overlay though. In that screencap from that E! clip, it clearly shows that there's no satin edging from the center of the dress to the arm in the front - that is why I'm confused. It seems like the satin binding joins the arm separates from the chiffon layer - so that the binding goes attaches at the arm on the underside of her arm while the chiffon goes around the outside of her arm and is gathered there. Is there an additonal chiffon overlay layer or something? ?:| It doesn't seem right that the binding would separate from the chiffon like that though...
2) Is there a satin strip of material that goes down the bottom? Or is that the light hitting the material differently? It's so confusing...

RE: Rainbow dress
Hey everyone, I'm making a costuming website and I want some expert how-to's, so anyone who's finished this dress and wants to help by sending me a step by step or actually help with the design, it would be much appreciated.

RE: Rainbow dress
Hey everyone! -
I am so determined to make this dress right. I have 2 questions about silk: first, would silk gauze work to sew this and if anyone knows of a site that has 3-6mm 54-60" silk chiffon? I've been checking around, but I can't find any. That would help me so much! :-D

RE: Rainbow dress
Actually, I'm fairly sure the dress goes from yellow to pink to blue, not purple.
Silk gauze is awfully thin for this dress. I'm using 10mm silk chiffon (either 54" or 60", from Dharma) for my mantle, and a charmeuse (matte side up) for the underdress.

RE: Rainbow dress
Thank you!
How is the 10mm working? How much of a difference is there in thickness between the 5mm and the 10mm? Because I can find 10mm (at thaisilks.com), but I can't find any 54" in 5mm. And thanks for the tip! -Anna

Don't forget about the top of the dress...it has that iridescent shelling of some sort....you'll probably have to mold that somehow.

RE: Rainbow dress
A few questions here...
1) would it be possible to make this costume by the 1st or 2nd weekend in June? (I'll be shopping for silks on tuesday).
2) Would Airbrushing the color on work, I don't trust myself either with dying.
3) How do I do the hair for this, I have plenty of my own natural (about 3 ft worth).
Ferd: I found your sketches VERY helpful
one question for you, my FL came out to 64" that's bigger than the fabric and I don't want a seam running through horizontally, should I just shrink it to 60" flat? Other than that one question, your instructions seem very easy to follow

RE: Rainbow dress
1. Sure, as long as you work steadily and pace yourself. Mine has a scheduled completion date of May 1, but I've done all the preliminary work and cut out all the dress pieces. It's this darn fitting that's taking forever-- stupid slippery-like-eel charmeuse!
2. It might; I've never airbrushed. I plan to paint my dye on; that way I'll have the most control. (Current plan is to sew the dress completely together except for one seam, so I can lay the whole thing out flat, then paint.)
3. Not a clue. Personally, I hate the hairstyle she has with this dress, and plan to make up something of my own.

RE: Rainbow dress
Hey ya'll! I finally decided to peak my head out from under a pile of fabric to say "Hi"!!
Benae Quee
I'm glad you were able to follow the instructions
and Yes! You can finish one of these by June. Honestly, the dress is pretty easy to construct. The cutting out and dyeing is the killer. I have played around with one of the dresses to try and get better placement of colors and I am happier with the end result. I constructed the satin dress, and each overlay individually. Then I dyed them, then I finished the construction. I dyed the satin this time and the color is still subtle but nice. Basically dyeing is not that bad, if you take your time!!!! If you keep the fabric wet and move it around keeping the right parts in and out of the dye. Hangers and rubber bands are essential and a fan is nice, too.
Also, I am experimenting around with a new product I found that *might* be just right for the neckpiece. I found it at JoAnn's in the paint section. It is called
Magic Medium
and it is in a little jar. You mix in a few drops of your acryllic paint and mix slightly then spread onto wax paper. When it dries you can bend and shape it and cut it too. It is supposed to look like stained glass. You can then adhere it with a special adhesive to a shape form for your necklace. It takes 24-48 hours to dry--so I cannot give you the field results yet. It is pretty inexpensive and sounds good in theroy--so you may want to conduct your own experiment.
BQ
In regard to the measurement. I used a sheer that was 118" wide. But if you are using one that is 60" and don't want a seam, I'd say let it go. In all the drapes and ripples, I think it will be fine. You can edge it in the binding too to add some more length--but it may slightly vary the look.
Hope all is well! Ferd

RE: Rainbow dress
Yay! *bounces up and down* After stabilizing the top of the dress (using interfaced muslin) I was able to get the lining fitted today! That means tomorrow I can sew the fitting lines down, alter my silk pieces accordingly, and get started on the actual dress! Maybe I'll be able to dye by next week!
One thing though-- in fitting it we discovered I'm *definitely* going to need double-stick tape, or something like it, to keep the sides of the dress against my body. It's fine when I stand or walk normally, but if I try to move my hips-- whoops! So. What's good for sticking costumes to your body for long periods of time?

RE: Rainbow dress
In one of the recent sales flyers, I think the last one with all the prom pictures in it, Hancocks advertised a double-sided tape meant for use with clothing. It's supposed to not leave marks on the fabric when you take it off.
