I'm still new here, but I had to put in my comments. That is one amazing dye job! I am very impressed! Makes me want to do the same!

Thanks!
I'm a little disappointed, because I went into see the dress today, now that it's dry, and the blue at the bottom dried funny-- probably because I draped it over chairs before the dye was completely set. *sigh* Ah well. It shouldn't be too obvious, since the skirt is so full and drapey.

RE: Rainbow dress
Well, it looked great to me. I showed it a friend of mine here at work who is into costuming, too, (mostly RennFaire stuff) and she thought it was amazing as well. I have always wanted to make the flame colored handmaiden robes, but wasn't really sure how to go about doing that. Now I'll definitely have to try my hand at it. But first, my RennFaire costume!

Yes Caitlin, it's looking wonderful!
FERD
, thanks! I'm using a very light yellow peachskin for the underdress. I'm only making it as one layer (less for her to ruin...) and poly chiffon for the wings. The peachskin, besides being on sale!, is super soft so I know she won't complain about itchiness, which is a BIG thing with her. As a dress-up play costume, I'm not going for super accuracy here, but it will be recognizable, assuming it works!

Caitlin
, I actually dreamt about your dress last night... I dreamt that I had tried to "help" with the stiffness/dye issue by rinsing out the dress, and when I ran it under the water, there was some sort of acidic reaction and your dress more or less fell to pieces in my hands. I was terrified that I had ruined all your hard work.
What a bizarre and neurotic little freak I am.

How funny
I'm not the only one who dreams about crazy sewing stuff. It's totally like Tetris.

I, too spend hours thinking about other people's projects--So I was brainstorming about a "child-proof" version of the neckpiece that goes with this dress. Since your niece is only 4--I thought the softer the better. I would make it a sort of very thinly batted-thin pillow. I would use a pastel fabric (I recommend pale blue) then overlay it with an irredescent organza (the kind of shimmery, sheer stuff that reflects the colors of a prism) and you could back it in a gold lame'. Use thin poly batting and turn it. The basic shape is simple and the colors would look really cool like a shell. You could use gold fabric paint, or gold trim to simulate the gold soldering and attach it with a "dress up" style necklace or even attach it to the dress.

RE: Rainbow dress
LOL surlygirlie! Thank you, everyone, for your kind words about my dress. I worked on it for about four hours today-- looks like rinsing it out did the trick, it's now nice and soft. So I ironed it, serged all the seams, and right before I had to go to lab I was able to baste it to the lining. Looks like it's going to work! So all I've got to do is sew it to the lining, put in the zipper, and hem it. Which I should be able to do before 5 pm tomorrow, right? (Did I mention I'm trying to wear this dress to Senior Ball tomorrow night? <g>)
I also found some shoes at Payless, thanks to a suggestion from the Picnic Dress thread:
I have to wear flats with the dress, because unfortunately I made the dress too short! If I have the time I'd like to color them silver, but white will work well enough for tomorrow. And they were even on sale for $7! Unfortunately, they didn't have them in a 6 1/2, so I had to buy the 7s and get heel pads. With the pads in, they seem to be staying on my feet fine, so yay!
Phew! Lots to do tomorrow.

I hope you have a great evening Caitlin!!!! The dye job you did is quite impressive :-)
Ferd, I must stay I fell much more in love with your new version than with the first one. I absolutely adore the front knot you've managed, like in the concept art, it's really lovely, why didn't I think of doing it on mine? Anyway, it' absolutely wonderfull!

I've never studied the dress but I've always thought that the shoes are a high-heeled sandal in silver of some sort.

RE: Rainbow dress
Obi Anne, I think you're right. From what I've been able to see of the shoes, they look like silver pumps, maybe an inch or inch and a half heel. But alas, I have to wear flats. But at least I can turn them silver!
For those who are wondering, I managed to finish the dress in time, and I wore it to Senior Ball! It was a big hit; everyone loved it. And the double-stick tape held pretty well-- I was even able to dance in the dress.
Pictures are forthcoming, maybe tomorrow.
