RE: Rainbow dress
Yay! I started the dress
Ferd: your directions are making this dress soooo easy to do
I've got the undermost part of the under dress done I got a soft cotton for the innermost part, and need to get some chiffon for the overlays. I've finished the mantle pieces and temporarily attached them to the dress, it looks lovely, I just have to add some finishing touches
I LOVE this dress (and I know my boyfriend does too hehe), can't wait to wear it to Wizard World East in a few weeks
I'll make sure to take PLENTY of pics when it's completely done, I know how much you all like pics

RE: Rainbow dress
Woohoo! Today I dyed the mantle/overlay/whatever you want to call it. The dyeing went well, but I had some issues trying to dry the pieces...not easy to find space to carefully air-dry two 4-yd pieces of fabric! But I think overall it will be fine. I don't have any pictures, because I didn't have my camera with me.
Tomorrow I plan to dye my satin binding, and perhaps get started sewing it.
Great to hear you're doing so well, Benae!

Ferd, your directions rule! In 3 weeks, after graduation and such, I'm going to do a mock-up of this dress for my Padme doll. I'll just use highlighters to color the fabric (so it will still seem light/airy) and practice putting it together. Yay!! This will be so much fun!!

RE: Rainbow dress
More mundane updates: dyed the satin binding today. It didn't go as well as I'd hoped-- got rather splotchy results, because I did it in a hurry-- but after I dried and ironed the pieces, they look fine. Just adds to the character of the dress.
Tomorrow is attaching the binding to the mantle and gathering up the sleeve-like parts. Hopefully I can finish all the fabric-related stuff by Thursday. (I'll work on the jewelry after school's over.)

Ferd, your dress version 2.0 has really got me wondering… The knott like thing you did on the front is really gorgeous, and I'd like to try it on my dress. You alway give such great advice, I'd really like to know how you did it.
thanks!

RE: Rainbow dress
Phew. After working steadily for about a week, I finally feel like I'm *getting* somewhere, instead of just treading water! Most of the satin binding is on (that took FOREVER!), and tomorrow I'm going to gather up the bustle in the back and attach the 'gauntlets' to the arms. I may yet get all the fabric work done by Friday!

It's getting there, it's really truly getting there! I'm *really* close to being done with all the fabric stuff. I gathered up the bustle in the back-- it looks *gorgeous*, if I do say so myself!-- and trimmed the train. The train has about half the satin binding on; a half-hour of hand sewing will finish the rest.
I made the gauntlets for the arm-pieces of the mantle-- out of knee-high panty hose! It works fantastically well; keeps the mantle exactly where I want it, and matches my skin tone pretty closely. I added hooks and eyes to the lower closure of the left arm-piece; there's some serious weirdness going on with the lower part of the right arm-piece, so I'll have to fix that before I can put on hooks and eyes.
Then all I need to do is gather up the fabric at the top front, which shouldn't be too difficult (I've been putting it off until I can line it up with the underdress), and I'll be DONE with the fabric! And then it's just the jewelry left to make.
<EDIT-- I found some sites online that sell the roll-on body adhesive
Ferd
had mentioned.>
THANK YOU ALL for your help and support through this very very complex project.
I promise, I'll get some pictures soon!

RE: Rainbow dress
Hey everyone! Guess what--I have started the mockup for my Padme doll! Using cheap fabric scraps--acetate for the underdress and something-like-poly chiffon for the overdress and wings, I'm doing this to see if Ferd's guide works for me! The wings seem to be working well, but the underdress is giving me problems already. Maybe someone can help me out.
I haven't cut out the underdress yet, but am making a paper pre-mock up (pathetic, isn't it?!). For the pattern, I printed out enlarged versions of the sketches
http://www.padawansguide.com/padme/pastel/ferd1.jpg
and
http://www.padawansguide.com/padme/pastel/ferd5.jpg.
I took these pieces and cut them to fit the doll. Then I stapled them together along what I think were the right lines to make a 3D paper wannabe dress for the doll. Now, I'm measuring each part to see how much longer I need it to be. Finally, using the papers (now taken off the doll and unstapled) as a guide and the measurements to verify length, I'm making pattern pieces on a manila envelope.
Does this make sense to anyone? I'm borrowing my sister's digital camera tomorrow to take pictures, which I'll put online asap to hopefully illustrate what I just attempted to describe. The problem is simply that I'm confusing myself and I don't want to spend the time cutting this out, only to find that it doesn't work.
The wings, on the other hand, are working out great! I'm using a highlighter to make the colors. I tried using water with food coloring in it, but that didn't work. Oh well. So I spent a half hour marking chiffon with a yellow highlighter. It works though!

RE: Rainbow dress
Hey there! I'm so glad that my little doodles are helpful to some of you
--But please do not take them as actual pattern pieces--they are simply doodles. For my version 2.0 I varied the under dress and got a much better result--I used a under dress that had an empire waistline instead of a straight dress. The bodice fit was much better and the overlays worked so much better. I will be writing this up for Maggie to add to that page.
P.S. I just got some pics from a client today of her in her pastel dress. I will post them this evening for you all to see.

your doodles are better than anything I could come up with.
I think it will work ok. It's only a mockup, after all.

Ferd, you doodles were super helpful to the seamstress who worked on my dress. And my dad, who had no idea what I was talking about most of the time. Thanks!

I got these pics this morning from a sweet young lady who I made a pastel dress for her to wear to Prom. She opted for a higher more modest back, and did not wear the neckpiece to the dance--But I thought ya'll might like to see the pictures. It can give you an idea of what the dress looks like under the necklace, and with the back line modified.
Thanks
KP
for the pics!
Sorry, you have to cut and paste me (and then turn your head [face_shocked] I have to fix them when I add them to my website )
