ok, rainbow dress people.....I told a friend I would attempt to make the necklace for her dress, and bought sculpy instead is sintra. Do I need to take it back, and look for the sintra, or have any of you made the necklace with this???
Please advise..........

I have not made this costume, but if it were me I'd really use Sintra over Sculpy for the necklace. I just think sintra is a lot easier to work with for something like this. Sintra is probably lighter too.

Maybe others who have made it can chime in though.

Looks like at the neck she had velcro, or maybe it is elastic sown at the back... Picture found here: http://www.padmeswardrobe.com/images/episodeII/padme/retreat/IIPD014.jpg

Also, she has some sort of neat necklace on. I've seen the top part of it at Walmart and Claires. But you need to ad to it, because there is mopre than one layer, and it gets wider the further down you go. I would use something dull. Don't cut metal sheet for this, because the edges are VERY sharp, and you could easily injure yourself. Unless you could find some way to dull the edges... Maybe melting or sanding. But use extreem caution. I hope this helped. Also, if you need reference pictures, here is the place: http://www.padmeswardrobe.com/aotc_retreat.php

Edit: Now that I think about it. You could use that foamy stuff. You know, it's like a sheet of paper... But it's made of foam! IT comes in a TON of different colors, and can be found at Walmart, Staple, and Joan's Fabirc. You could get tht and spray paint it silver.

In that picture, I don't think was any velcro or elastic. What you see tehre is the silk of the halter style dress. It clasps in the back with a small hook and eye. The small gold chain is part if the shell necklace. Mine is made of Sintra (expandable PVC) and it works great!

I made mine with sintra as well...it turned out pretty good, but is a little thicker than planned. I tried to make another out of sculpey and piece it together, but had trouble forming it to fit right around my neck (I probably just need more experience working with the sculpey anyway). I'm thinking about getting thinner sintra and cracking some mother of pearl pieces (my aunt lives in Florida and has lots of shells) to make something of a mosaic for the white bits on the necklace. Any thoughts or tips? Aside from the headbands and hair (finally done praying ), this necklace has been a pain (but still kinda fun).
p.s. Tally, your dress is BEAUTIFUL!

ok, I made a necklace with sintra,(yea, it was fun!) and it turned out pretty good, aside from the drip of gold paint at the top, which I could not wipe off in time nor paint fully over-

I don't have any use for it, it was a first run for the one I'm making for a friend, so if anyone fancies it, shoot me a pm.
thought on what to do to imporve the next one?

Nidrail, your doll is beautiful!!! That is one lucky Barbie!
I just finished dying the front and back drapes for the dress. I didn't let the fact that I had no rubber gloves stop me, but it may take a few days for the blue dye to fade from my nails...
I'm happy with the results, the dyes took well and faded nicely into each other. The dress gets dipped in a few days. I made a test sleeve out of spandex, and I like the fit. I'm not sure what to do about attaching the sleeves to the drapes. Should I attach them to the edges of the sleeves then sew the edges together , or should I complete the sleeves then attach the drapes? What would be a cleaner, less poofy look? Oh, great, now my stomach hurts........ worried

Thanks, Luminous!

Well, I made the sleeve first (for my doll), and I left the seam on the Outside, and then sewed the sleeve halves together and then sewed them onto the sleeve seam, if that makes sense. So you can kinda see how that might look. Again I've only done it for a doll so I don't know all the ins and outs... wish I did though! Goodluck!!

Thanks for the tip about the sleeves...I am finding the trickiest part to be dying the satin trim to match the different dyes on the back train. Satin blanket binding doesn't take the dye that well, and I've had to leave it in for about an hour for each color. Are there any other dye products aside from RIT that would work well with the trim (I think it's polyester satin)?
Now would be a great time to own a dressform...I'm basically eyeballing where everything goes and pinning it then trying it on to see if it is right. I want to get this thing done for D*C, I have finals and comps in one week (my main priority and torture), school's starting next week and I think I'm gonna go nuts before then. Whoa, sorry...just needed to vent a little. hypnotized
