This is going to sound real silly, I bet, but since we're briefly on the gathering topic, um...could anyone tell me how to do it...? blush I've looked through sewing books and even after four years of sewing...I still don't know how to. sad

Gathering's pretty easy. There are 2 ways to do it (that I know of):
1. 2 long, basic running stitches (basting, basically), or
2. A Large zig-zag stitch placed over a thin cord.

To gather, just pull on either one edge of the 2 running stitches or the cord until the fabric area is the specified length.

I made this for my daughter 7 years ago, but decided to sell it. It's not perfect as in a copy of the gown, but for a little lady, it did well.

Thanks Sister_Sola!

Wow, I can't believe no one has posted in this thread in almost two years! Not that there wasn't a ton of information in it already... I've just finished reading through the whole thing, but it took me about a week! tongue But I think I have a fairly good grasp of how to do this, at least in my head. We'll see how it all translates when I start making it. tongue

I have I think eight yards (it's seven or eight) of chiffon that I've been sitting on for years. tongue I don't remember how much it was, but it's a home dec type, very wide. Polyester, I'm sure. I don't love the way it drapes, but I will make it up anyway since I have it, and if I like how it turns out then I'll keep it. If not, I'll have learned the process of dyeing and putting it together, and I'll redo the whole thing in silk. That's my plan, anyway.

I want to wear this costume at Celebration V, so whatever version I get done by then is what I'll use.

I want to thank everyone who posted in this thread with their thoughts, tips and tutorials, as well as pictures of their costumes. I wish all the image links still worked, but the ones I have seen are all quite stunning. You should all be proud of the excellent work you have done. applause

Ooh, I'm glad this has opened up again.

You know looking at the above photo crops (of B_Q's photos I'm thinking?) it looks like the front of the underdress is actually a half circle.
If it were on the bias there would only be piecing on one side. With the even piecing on both sides it is clearly cut with both sides of the piece on the same grain.

In this case though switch the fold (f) and selvage (s) around. Then the side
