Yeah I love how it reuses the structure of the Alien teaser with the same sound effect/siren while showing different styles of visuals than Alien, and from there you only ever get the Siren, the Xenomorph scream and the sound of a flamethrower and explosion. Very simple and very effective, and doesn't spoil much other than the loader and a glimpse of the Queen (though I agree with Rogue that the former isn't much of a spoiler without context- you have no idea that it's about to be followed by one of the most memorable and badass lines of dialogue in film history).

Yeah, this trailer was intelligently put together. Smart marketing: it shows us basically everything we need to know to make a decision on buying a ticket: action, Signorney, the girl, glimpses of the aliens, and that awesome suit, but it reveals nothing of the storyline and certain spoils nothing like Rogue said. To use the current trendy term, "picture perfect." Excellent editing too.

The only thing it's missing that would make it perfect is the trailer voice guy from the full trailer going "Aliens: This time, it's war." cool

War! shock

Moving on to something a little more family-oriented...we go to 2006.

Frank Marshall, long time producer of numerous Spielberg films, as well as a couple of Peter Bogdonavich movies and an M. Night Shyamalan film or two, steps behind the camera as director.

His previous two directorial outings dealt with nature (Arachnaphobia) and snow/survival (Alive!).

This time, both are combined.

It's "The Incredible Journey"!

As usual, too much information, though I'd like to see this.

Eight Below's IMDB page has 238 comments from the public, and I'd estimate 90 to 95% of them are quite positive.

While this isn't a masterpiece for the ages, it's a pretty good film, and for a Disney movie about cute dogs it actually has, if you'll pardon the expression, some bite to it.

When I look at a movie and consider it's quality, I always try to factor in what an Olympic judge would - which is "degree of difficulty." Well, when it comes to Eight Below, the patience it must have taken to make this film must have been staggering. To get the footage of these dogs, some of which is phenomenal, must have required the patience of a saint on the part of the director, crew and dog trainers. The degree of difficulty is off the charts. To me, it's amazingly well edited and put together, all things considered.

I liked the fact that Paul Walker played the part as a "real guy." He's been criticized for his acting in other films, but his understated performance, particularly at the end works for this story. The events of the film are so emotional, especially for the dog lovers in the audience, that if the actors had over played their scenes, it would have been unbearable. I also think that he and the other actors knew that no matter what they did, they were going to be upstaged by the dogs, so they accepted that and let it flow.

The trailer does a good job of establishing the basic storyline. An enjoyable film but due to one particularly intense scene, not necessarily a good one for really young children. Strange for a Disney film.

Apparently we don't have a lot of dog lovers in the Amphitheatre. Well, Eight Below was a very successful film for Disney and I liked it. I liked how the trailer gave all the dogs a character name and played that up. After all, those are the real stars of the film, from a certain point of view.

Moving along we have another fevered vision from nutcase genius director with a chip on his shoulder, Terry Gilliam.

Heath Ledger's final film, with assistance from Johnny Depp and Jude Law.

The Trailer for the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

I'm sure the marketing department at the studio LOVED this title. tongue

Obviously, as a huge Terry Gilliam fan (heck, I actually liked Tideland! silly ), I can't WAIT to see this film. However, it doesn't come to Czech Republic/Slovakia until January 2010. You can imagine how enthusiastic about that I am. plain

You're right. He's also in the Gilliam film. But I HAVE been trying to forget Colin Farrell ever since he wore that atrocious goldilocks blonde wig in ALEXANDER. rolling_eyes

There's no question he's brilliant and talented, I'm just a little worried he's finally going to upset someone so much that they're going to kill him! Even some of his fellow Python's, such as Terry Jones, have commented on how antagonistic, belligerent and egotistical he can be. Still, I have a lot of respect for the guy. If we kicked everyone out of the movie business who was egotistical, there wouldn't be anyone left! tongue

Yeah, I'm not too fond of him, either, even though I quite liked Alexander. tongue

Oh, I'm glad that there is still someone who's willing to fight for his vision no matter what, and to stand up to the studio runners who think they know better how films should be made. Yes, Gilliam is an egotistical, antagonistic bastard, but if he weren't, do you think he would've created films like Brazil and Time Bandits and Tideland? I don't think so.

I have a theory, that every genius (whether a genius artist, musician, or physicist) must have something wrong with him. Call it karma or whatever you like, but you can't have someone who is a genius and at the same time he's perfectly healthy, with happy and ordered life, and well-adjusted and pleasant personality. There always must be something wrong to balance out the genius. This is probably bollocks, but I've noticed this in a number of people who can be considered geniuses.

Eight Below

I'd actually like to see this one; I was surprised at the good reviews it got. Trailer is by the numbers. And I wish they'd stop trying to sell every movie as the greatest story of all time.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasuss

Did they even need to put Gilliam's name up at the end? If you don't know by now that he's the only person in the world who would even try to make a movie like this, you won't be seeing the movie anyway. Gilliam has an odd vision; sometimes too odd, sometimes perfectly odd. 12 Monkeys would be an example of the latter, Jabberwocky of the former. This looks like too much of a 'visual splendor' movie for me; and it appears that it'll have the kind of over the top twitchy acting that Gilliam occasionally rides too hard. Also, I confess to not actually knowing who Dr. Parnassus was, who the devil was, and who the mysterious stranger was, based solely on that trailer. And who do the young girls belong too, the devil, the doctor or the stranger? Weird trailer for what is going to be a weird movie; probably you still won't know the answers to those questions even after you see the movie. It was, however, oddly moving to see that "not even death" moment. Still, I'll give this one a big fat pass, I think. This trailer made me less likely to see the film, I think, though admittedly, I was already pretty unlikely to do so.

I'm in the opposite boat. Terry Gilliam's a very uneven director to my taste, but while I'm a bit wary of this, I'm also cautiously optimistic, and I'll forgive a lot in a movie if it successfully shows me the world as I haven't seen it -- or even just honestly involves me in wonderful visuals. Even though guys like Gilliam and del Toro aren't the best storytellers or most consistent out there, I'll pay for a ticket because I can trust them to envelop me in a fantastical visual experience.

I just watched the trailer for the first time. Gilliam's track record is indeed spotty and uneven, with his previous Ledger-starring effort, The Brothers Grimm, being an unintelligible mess and IMO the absolute nadir of Gilliam's career. But this thing looks remarkable, beautifully crafted, delightful, fantastical, marvelous. It's a stroke of inspired genius casting Depp, Farrell and Law to fill in Ledger's very large shoes. The opening weekend BO should go through the roof based on the cast alone! Gilliam deserves a hit after all these years, if only so he can continue to be funded, and this film looks like it has all the elements of a holiday-season blockbuster.
