There were few safe havens left; the last few hours had proved that well enough. Padme was unsure of where she could go to hide, but it stood to reason that she would be secure enough on her ship, surrounded by those who were still loyal to her and sworn to her protection.

As it turned out, she was a fool to think that.

She had no sooner staggered up the ramp, clutching at the crimson that spread from the injuries to her shoulder and leg, than Sabe stepped out of the cockpit, blaster in hand, face determined as she scanned the area for signs of trouble.

“Finally,” Padme grunted, freeing one hand to catch herself against Sabe’s shoulder. “A familiar face.”

Sabe responded by shooting her in the stomach.

She careened into the wall, rebounding with a sickening thud as she collapsed to the floor. Pain radiated from the site, forcing her to double over as she strained to catch her breath. Her vision swam, but she could almost clearly see Sabe smirking in triumph.

“Take that, boss.”

She wanted to ask why, wanted to retaliate, but the shock of the attack overrode every instinct and prompted her to say in a most dispassionate tone, “Ow. That hurt.”

It certainly couldn’t be standard for an attacker to be concerned for their victim’s well-being, but Sabe being Sabe, she immediately started checking her Queen over. Padme whimpered as her hands ran over her abdomen and Sabe let out a very menacing cackle that had a hint of mocking to it.

"Are you hurt?” she taunted. “Don’t be such a baby. Minor damage at worst.”

It didn’t feel like minor damage and the physical problems were only secondary to what this implied about the loyalty of her handmaidens. If Sabe, her most loyal assistant, could stoop to this kind of treachery, it did not bode well for those who were simply on the job for the prestige of it all.

Padme’s trembling hand finally found her own blaster and the shot caught Sabe squarely in the chest before she could respond properly.

Sabe looked down at the stain that was beginning to saturate her jumpsuit, then settled back on her knees. “I'm sorry, Padme,” she mumbled. “Anakin made me."

"Made you what?” Padme spluttered. “Why would he?”

“He has his reasons,” Sabe said with a wink. “Maybe he thought he could kiss your boo-boos better.”

A nine-year-old is trying to kill me with paintball so he can kiss my boo-boos better?

"He's so dead,” the words poured out of a gasping Padme.

Random, yes, but the plot bunny and dialogue were, on the whole, not mine. We had to take the result of a very weird mass-round-robin and write it as a vignette. This is what unfortunately came out of it. I thought it was funny.

When I started to read this, it sounded serious and then I got to the last part, and smiled.

This was inspired partially by a mushfic that went horribly wrong. I started the fic with paintball and 127 pages later, only two characters were still alive. Oops... Anyway, the paintball was ANakin, Padme, Obi-Wan and Sabe and I thought having it with 9-year-old wonderboy would be funny.

LOL!

At first, I thought it was seious, and Padme had been betrayed by those closest to her. Nice twist. Loved it, DarthIshtar.

A long time ago in a house far away, there was a mother who was strong in the ways of the Force.
She "forced" her sons to clean their room, she "forced" her sons to behave.

Thanks, Dally.

Gina, I liked keeping it in that illusion, because it made for a funny ending.
